Connection to the fire brigade and connection conditions in NRW
If your fire alarm system is connected to the fire brigade, the Technische Anschlussbedingungen (TAB, technical connection conditions) of your Brandschutzdienststelle (fire protection authority) also apply. Here you will find what applies to a detector replacement or a significant modification – and the connection conditions of all districts and independent cities in NRW.
Fire brigade and connection
New fire brigade connection or extended acceptance inspection after a significant modification?
In NRW there is no uniform state-wide rule for this. Inspection by approved inspection experts is governed by the Prüfverordnung NRW (PrüfVO NRW) – whereas acceptance by the fire brigade and connection to the control centre are regulated by each Brandschutzdienststelle (fire protection authority) in its Technische Anschlussbedingungen (TAB, technical connection conditions). The basic pattern, however, is the same everywhere:
Significant modification
- Before: Coordinate the modification with the fire protection authority – depending on the municipality, this may even mean a new planning meeting.
- Afterwards: Inspection by approved inspection experts before recommissioning (PrüfVO NRW, § 2).
- Fire brigade: depending on the TAB, a new acceptance inspection by the fire brigade – usually only once a defect-free inspection report is available.
- Documents: Update and submit the FAS concept, fire brigade plans and fire brigade route cards.
A new connection in the sense of a new connection application is not explicitly required by the TABs we evaluated. As a rule, it only becomes necessary if something changes on the transmission equipment itself.
Like-for-like detector replacement
- no expert inspection, no fire brigade acceptance, no new connection
- Coordinate any disconnections during the replacement with the control centre in advance
- Document the replacement in the logbook; detector designations and route cards remain valid
For minor modifications in Cologne, notifying the fire brigade is sufficient; it then decides whether a planning meeting or an acceptance inspection is required.

Anyone who carries out a significant modification without involving the fire protection authority risks consequences: the Cologne fire brigade, for example, can then inform the building control authority. The current TAB of the fire protection authority responsible for your property is always decisive – consult it before every significant modification.
Connection conditions of all districts, cities and independent cities in NRW
In addition to the districts and independent cities, many towns belonging to a district have their own fire protection authority with their own connection conditions. Where published online, they are listed indented (↳) under their district. The authority in whose area your property is located is always decisive.
Different names, same content: In the past, these sets of rules were mostly called Technische Anschaltbedingungen (TAB), today predominantly Anschlussbedingungen. Many fire protection authorities have not yet renamed their documents – depending on the location, they are called “Technische Anschaltbedingungen”, “Technische Anschlussbedingungen (TAB)”, “Aufschaltbedingungen”, “Anschlussbedingungen” or even “Merkblatt”. What is always meant are the conditions for connecting a fire alarm system to the fire brigade. The table therefore shows the title under which each document is published.
