Replacing ESSER detectors: types, successors and bases

Which ESSER detectors from year of manufacture 2000 onwards must be replaced, what is still available, which detector replaces older types and when a new base is needed – with the manufacturers’ order numbers.

Detector age

How old is the detector – how long has it been in operation?

  • ESSER: Type plate with article number, serial number and date of manufacture. According to Honeywell, IQ8Quad detectors store alarm and operating data in the detector. On IQ8Control and FlexES Control, the detector data of IQ8Quad and ES Detect detectors (including contamination level) can be retrieved via the operating unit or tools 8000. On aspirating smoke detectors, the date is on the detector module.
  • Logbook and reports (decisive): The operating time counts from the commissioning of the detector. The date is recorded in the logbook, in the commissioning or acceptance report or in the last replacement report. This gives the years and months in operation.
  • Type plate on the detector: The label (usually on the underside or side of the detector, visible after twisting it out of the base) shows the type, serial number and date of manufacture or a date code (e.g. year/calendar week). If no commissioning date is documented, we take the cautious approach of calculating from the date of manufacture.
  • Reading out via the panel: With many addressable loop detectors, detector data such as serial number, date of manufacture, degree of contamination and – depending on the system and software version – operating hours can be retrieved via the panel’s operating unit or programming software. We do this during the survey using your programming file.

This determines the replacement interval under DIN 14675: as a rule 5 years, or 8 years for detectors with contamination compensation and testing in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications – details under Deadlines & standards. Send us a photo of the type plate and we will determine the age for you.

Identify

Which ESSER detector do you have installed?

The images show the current ESSER designs. Within a series, many types look the same – what matters is the article number. It is on the type plate on the detector (usually on the back or on the edge of the detector) and on the base. It also tells you the series: 76xxxx / 78xxxx = Series 9000, 801xxx = Series 9200, 802xxx / 803xxx = IQ8Quad, 800xxx = ES Detect.

Images: Honeywell / ESSER. Examples shown; housing colour and labelling may differ depending on the type.

Series 9000 and Series 9200: replacing detectors and bases

The conventional detectors of Series 9000 and the analogue detectors of Series 9200 were manufactured until roughly the mid-2000s and are no longer available. Smoke and multi-sensor detectors of these series have in any case exceeded the replacement interval under DIN 14675-1. The successors do not fit into the old bases (7814xx / 7815xx / 801593) – a new base is always required.

Current series

IQ8Quad and ES Detect: same detector, same base

Detectors of the IQ8Quad (analogue technology, esserbus) and ES Detect (conventional technology) series are still available. When replaced in accordance with the deadline, the detector is exchanged for the same type and the existing base 805590 or 805591 remains. For IQ8Quad there are also self-test detectors (-ST), which make on-site function testing easier.

IQ8Quad self-test detectors (-ST)

The self-test detectors of the IQ8Quad series test their sensors automatically, making on-site maintenance easier. They have only been in use for a few years – replacement is expected to be due from approx. 2033 at the earliest. They are replaced with the same type; the base 805590 remains.

aspirating smoke detectors (ASD)

ESSER aspirating smoke detectors on the esserbus

ESSER offers aspirating smoke detectors with an integrated esserbus coupler: TITANUS EB (WAGNER technology), FAAST LT EB and VESDA-E EBTI (Xtralis/Honeywell technology). They run directly on the esserbus or esserbus-PLus loop and are programmed with tools 8000. All devices are tested to EN 54-20. When replaced in accordance with the deadline under DIN 14675, the detector module or the replacement detector is exchanged – not the base unit.

Important

Before ordering

  • Check the panel: Whether IQ8Quad or ES Detect detectors can be operated on your fire alarm control panel depends on the panel, loop or line technology and programming. We check this using your detector list and programming file.
  • Replacement interval: Smoke and multi-sensor detectors after 5 years at the latest, or after 8 years with automatic contamination compensation and testing in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications – details under Deadlines & standards.
  • Change of detector series: New bases, different detector types or a changed number of detectors may constitute a significant modification – see expert inspection and fire brigade.
  • EN 54 tested (as of 19.10.2026): All IQ8Quad, ES Detect and self-test detectors listed as available are certified to EN 54-5 (heat) or EN 54-7 (smoke), those with integrated isolator also to EN 54-17 and those with sounder/flashing beacon additionally to EN 54-3/-23; the aspirating smoke detectors to EN 54-20. Exception: the IQ8Quad Ex (i) has been discontinued; for hazardous (Ex) areas, the replacement must be clarified individually. The detectors that are no longer available were approved under the EN 54 or VdS rules applicable when they were introduced; since 2008, CE marking according to EN 54 has been mandatory for new detectors – which is why we only list currently certified types as replacements.
  • Installation by a specialist company only: Replacement and repair of detectors in fire alarm systems required under building law are part of maintenance and are reserved for a specialist company certified to DIN 14675 – even if you only buy the detectors from us. Details under Legal situation.
  • Order numbers are the article numbers of the manufacturer ESSER by Honeywell (last updated: 18.10.2026, source: esser-systems.com). The links lead to the manufacturer’s product search.
  • Image credits and trademarks: Product images © Honeywell / ESSER. The images serve solely to identify the detectors. Brand and product names are the property of their respective owners. Further details in the Legal notice.
